The Four Strategic Imperatives
2
Residential and Campus Life—$185 million
To foster human understanding, lifelong friendships, and an appreciation for community and place
The Case
Students come to Dartmouth expecting a pluralistic community in a beautiful setting with safe, clean dormitory rooms and myriad social and cultural activities. The College is in a housing crunch, with better living, dining, and social spaces years overdue to address these basic student needs. In addition, recreation, arts, and community service programs - crucial to the Dartmouth Experience - need funding to stay competitive with peer institutions and meet student demand.
The Need
To invest $187 million in undergraduate and graduate residential and campus life. This includes construction of new residence halls and dining facilities, construction and renovation of athletic facilities, and additional support for extracurricular programs.
The Impact
Support for residential and campus life initiatives will enable more undergraduate and graduate students to live on campus and relieve overcrowding for those who already do. Improved dining and meeting spaces will facilitate conversation, understanding, and friendships. More students will be able to participate in extracurricular activities, and the percentage of students involved in community service will rise from roughly four in ten today to nine in ten by the end of the Campaign. In all, Dartmouth students will better learn the life habits of cooperation and outreach, so crucial in today's interdependent world.
